It is best known for its striking, tubular flowers, which are bright blue to violet in color, often attracting hummingbirds and bees. Blooming from late spring to early summer, Penstemon azureus prefers full sun and well-drained soils, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. The plant is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from occasional watering in particularly dry conditions. Zones 5-9 Germination Germinating Penstemon azureus seeds requires a period of cold stratification to break dormancy. Typically, seeds should be placed in a moist medium (such as sand or peat) and stored in a refrigerator at around 34–40°F (1–4°C) for 4 to 6 weeks. After stratification, the seeds can be sown on the surface of a well-draining seed-starting mix, as they require light to germinate. Keep the medium moist but not waterlogged, and maintain a temperature of around 65–70°F (18–21°C) for optimal germination. Germination can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks.
