Little Dutch Tobacco seeds (1000+ per packet)

With the price of tobacco skyrocketing why not grow your own? Little Dutch This is by far one of my personal favorite tobacco varieties. Little Dutch has an excellent deep rich flavor with a mellow aromatic floral undertone. It is similar to Pennsylvania red in flavor profile but with a much more complex taste and aroma. It is a wonderful addition to blend – or even use straight – in cigars, cigarillos, pipes, and chewing tobacco. It easily air cures to a light chocolate brown color and unlike many cigars tobaccos it does not need an extensive ageing time to taste wonderful. Little Dutch has been around since the 1800’s. This variety makes an excellent choice for any grower, especially those with limited space, short growing seasons and windy locations due to its small compact form and relatively short maturity date (45-55 days). Little Dutch does not get much over three feet in height but still provides a good yield of long narrow leaves the that can reach 2 feet in length. It is easy to grow in pots and makes an attractive patio plant, especially when in full bloom – hummingbirds love them. It has been one of my hardiest varieties even during hot dry years where many other tobacco strains struggle. There is nothing bad of I can think of to say about Little Dutch. It is hands down one of the best tasting varieties, easy to grow, easy to cure, and is useable almost immediately. If I could only grow one variety Little Dutch would be the one, I definitely recommend it. It grows to a height of 4-5 feet with long narrow pointed leaves reaching 30 inches in length and 10 to 12 inches in width. It matures in only 50-55 days. How to Grow Tobacco Growing your own tobacco is so easy and not dissimilar to growing tomatoes. Place commercial seedling compost into a tray and soak the soil with water and allow the excess water to drain off. Sprinkle the tobacco seeds onto the surface of the damp soil. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light for germination. Tobacco seeds are very tiny, so be careful to spread the seeds as evenly as possible. Keep the soil damp being careful not to wash the seeds around when you water; better still water from below or use a mist sprayer. At a temperature of 75-80 degrees, seeds typically take a matter of days to germinate; though at this stage they are still rather small. At lower temperatures, the germination simply takes a few days longer. Plantlets are ready to be transplanted into bigger pots, when the leaves are about 1cm in length. Care should be taken not to disturb the roots. Feed should only be given to established and rapidly growing plants after they have been replanted. Tobacco requires a lot of nitrogen and potash, which can be supplied using standard garden fertilizer. You may want to grow your tobacco using only organic fertilizers. Ideally, space the tobacco plants about 2 ft. apart in rows 3 ft. apart. Transplant outside in the evening or when it is cloudy and overcast to avoid the youngsters from drying out. Water plants thoroughly after transplanting and water daily until plants become established. Like tomato plants, the branches (suckers, offshoots), should be removed to focus the plants energy on the large leaves. Tobacco plants generally require full to partial sunlight to grow properly. Tobacco is ready to be harvest after 60-90 days after germinating.
