Orchid tree is native to Southeast Asia and is well adapted to hot tropical climates as well as more mild ones. It grows to a medium height and has an open canopy. This semi-evergreen tree loses its leaves in early spring just before it blooms, which really helps the showy flowers stand out. The exotic blossoms are spidery and rich magenta to pink in color. They literally cloak the entire tree creating a spectacular show. The messy fruits that follow are foot-long flat brown pods filled with rounded seeds just smaller than a dime. These self sow prodigiously in sandy soils and may become invasive where conditions are right. The soft green, distinctly two-lobed leaves reappear shortly after flowering begins. This tough tree requires perfectly drained soil and full sun. It is very drought tolerant once established but if conditions are too dry it may become stunted but will not withhold bloom. This is a perfect problem solver for warm drought stressed areas in need of colorful accent trees. information source: www.learn2grow.com. So We Grew Some Extra Flowers, Just for You! Echinacea Rudbeckia Purpurea Free Shipping does not come with tracking numbers. If you need tracking, please pay for 1st. class USPS It’s a 38-46 inch high plant with multiple flowers that bloom Pink to Purple with age, prettier than most others. These plants are easy to grow and once established, resist extreme heat or drought. Their seeds and leaves have famous medicinal qualities for the immune system and they make great, long lasting cut flowers, and lets not forget how they attract numerous butterflies, bees & small birds. Echinacea Rudbeckia, is my most favorite native American plant. It’s rugged pollinator cone flower will always come back, year after year, without any help. It comes in so many colors, shapes, and sizes, and the various types, can become very confusing. For over 100 years the Brooklyn Botanical Garden has grown seven different varieties, “But we always favored the Purpurea, It’s simply, The Best!” I have always appreciated this plant for its durability during a dry season, it’s always able to withstand any long hot dry summers, but always hardy enough to survive right up to the coldest winter days. It’s a Perennial type plant which also reseeds itself and is very hardy. It flowers the first year in the very beginning of summer and continues constantly throughout autumn. The plants start with alternate leaves, borne by a petiole from 0 to 17 cm, they are oval to lanceolate, 5-30 x 5-12 cm; the margin is tightened to toothed. The young plants in springtime will add beauty to your garden and in it’s 2nd. year will start blooming flowers in the late spring, This is one plant that won’t disappoint you, year after year, with dozens of beautiful flowers, that last a long time all through the growing season. The erect stem is very stout and will stand upright, furnished with smaller upward branches, which broaden its diameter with more and more flowering buds. The flowers are lavender to pinkish purple and surround a reddish-bronze colored center dome. But best of all, Once a flower appears, it will stay there, on the plant, Right until the end of the growing season. And If you cut them off when the plant is young, more flowers will appear. They can reach heights of up to 4 feet, and grow the best, with a full view of the sun and light to medium watering. They are sometimes used for a property barrier, surrounding your home or garden. This species is one of the strongest stems with prominent, bristly seed heads of Echinacea seed. The cone flower becomes slightly sharp, but is not going to hurt you or stick into anyone’s skin or clothing. This feature can be helpful, if your garden or property gets invaded by humans or small natural wildlife. You’ll See! These flowers don’t fall off and are very hard for strangers to pick without permission, you see, to pick a flower off this plant, you must use a scissor. They can really make a nice garden border and will help bring in birds, bees and butterflies, that will have help germinate the rest of the flowering plants in your garden. These majestic plants prefer full sunlight and well drained soil, but not as well in partial sunlight or against a brick wall. Partially shaded area’s will still grow with a smaller amount of colorful flowers. Our seeds are fully matured for 2024 ready for this season’s new crop. They have been tested for germination and are guaranteed to grow dozens of flowering buds, Year after Year. Each flower is a beautiful purplish-pink and it’s leafs, stems, and seeds were known to be used through-out the centuries for medicinal applications. In fact, It’s still in use in the world today. Science is constantly testing it’s Health Benefits. Description:A long flowering variety producing a profusion of rosy pinkish-mauve purple flowers from early summer to late fall, a vigorous grower with strong roots and sturdy flowering stems, it really stands out in the late summer garden when most flowers are dead. Ornamental Features Coneflowers have masses of beautiful lightly-scented purplish-pink daisy flowers with a reddish-bronze eyes in the cone flower’s center. Its pointy leaves remain green in color throughout the season. They are know to be planted in groupings along side the Black-Eyed Susan. And the long stemmed flowers are excellent for cuttings because they stand straight and stay stiff in a long vase with water, for a very long time. Landscape Attributes Coneflower is an herbaceous perennial with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition. This is a relatively low maintenance plant, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It is a good choice for attracting butterflies to your yard, but the taste is not particularly attractive to deer, who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats in the garden. It has no significant negative characteristics. Coneflower is recommended for the following landscape applications; Mass PlantingGeneral Garden UseContainer Planting Planting & Growing Coneflower will grow to be about 36 inches tall at maturity with extending stems and flowers up to 4 feet tall, with a spread of up to 24 inches wide. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 10 years. This plant will grow the best under full sunlight. It is very adaptable to partial sunlight in both dry and moist locations, and should do just fine under any typical garden conditions. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for a low-water garden application. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This is a selection of a native North American species. Common Name: Eastern purple coneflower Type: Herbaceous perennial Family: Asteraceae Zone: 3 to 8 Height: 3 1/2 feet to 4 feet Spread: 2 feet apart Bloom Time: June to September Bloom Description: violet pink to purple rays and bronze-ruby brown cone Sun: Full sun to slightly part shade Water: Dry to medium Maintenance: Low Suggested Use: Naturalize Flower: Showy Attracts: Birds, Butterflies Tolerate: Deer, Drought, Clay Soil, Dry Soil, Shallow-Rocky Soil Culture Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best in full sun. An adaptable plant that is tolerant of drought, heat, humidity and poor soil. Divide clumps when they become overcrowded (about every 4 years). Plants usually re-bloom without deadheading, however prompt removal of spent flowers improves general appearance. Freely self-seeds if at least some of the seed heads are left in place. . Noteworthy Characteristics Echinacea purpurea, commonly called purple coneflower, is a coarse, rough-hairy, herbaceous perennial that is native to moist prairies, meadows and open woods of the central to southeastern United States (Ohio to Michigan to Iowa south to Louisiana and Georgia). It typically grows to 3-4′ tall. Showy daisy-like purple coneflowers (to 4″ diameter) bloom throughout summer atop stiff stems clad with coarse, ovate to broad-lanceolate, dark green leaves. Good fresh cut or dried flower. The dead flower stems will remain erect well into the winter, and if flower heads are not removed, the blackened cones may be visited by goldfinches or other birds that feed on the seeds. Genus name of Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos meaning hedgehog or sea-urchin in reference to the spiny center cone found on most flowers in the genus. Garden Uses Excellent, long-blooming flower for massing in the border, meadow, native plant garden, naturalized area, wildflower garden or part shade area of woodland garden. Often massed with black-eyed Susans (rudbeckias). USDA Hardiness Zone 3-9 ( But it Can be grown in any zone ) Growing and Maintenance Tips Plant coneflowers in full sun and well drained soils. Go easy on fertilizer, especially in production, as the resulting quick growth seems to make the plant more susceptible to disease. A native American plant indigenous to the central plains, Echinacea purpurea is virtually indestructible. We all enjoy the color it brings to the summer garden with its large daisy-like, rosy purple petals surrounding a copper-colored, dome-shaped central seed head. Echinacea purpurea is a North American species of flowering plant in the sunflower family. It is native to eastern North America and present to some extent in the wild in much of the eastern, southeastern and mid-western United States as well as in the Canadian Province of Ontario. It is most common in the Ozarks and in the Mississippi / Ohio Valley. Description Echinacea purpurea is an herbaceous perennial from 2 1/2ft. to 3 1/2 tall by 18 in wide at maturity. Depending on the climate, it blooms throughout summer into autumn. Its cone-shaped flowering heads are usually, but not always, purple in the wild. Its individual flowers (florets) within the flower head are hermaphroditic, having both male and female organs in each flower. It is pollinated by butterflies and bees. The alternate leaves, borne by a petiole from 0 to 17 cm, are oval to lanceolate, 5-30 x 5-12 cm; the margin is tightened to toothed. The leaves are deciduous but the plant is perennial. Echinacea purpurea is also grown as an ornamental plant in temperate regions. It is ideal for curbs, walkways or beds. The flowers can also go into the composition of fresh bouquets. Numerous cultivars have been developed for flower quality and plant form. The plant grows in sun or light shade. It thrives in either dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought once established. Propagation Echinacea purpurea can be propagated either vegetative or from seeds. Useful vegetative techniques include division, root cuttings, and basal cuttings. Clumps can be divided, or broken into smaller bunches, which is normally done in the spring or autumn. Cuttings made from roots that are “pencil-sized” will develop into plants when started in late autumn or early winter. Cuttings of basal shoots in the spring may be rooted when treated with rooting hormones, such as IBA at 1000 ppm. Plants raised outdoors Seed germination occurs best with daily temperature fluctuations or after a good stratification, which help to end dormancy. Seeds may be started indoors in advance of the growing season or outdoors after the growing season has started. Chemistry Echinacea purpurea contains multiple secondary metabolites that are produced by this plant. Thy include: alkamides, caffeic acid derivatives, polysaccharides, and glycoproteins. The secondary metabolites are believed to be biologically and pharmacologically active. Traditional herbal medicine Native Americans have used it for centuries to treat various ailments. Today, it’s best known, as an over-the-counter herbal remedy for the common cold or flu. However, it’s also used to treat pain, inflammation, migraines and other health issues. This article reviews the benefits, uses, side effects and dosage of Echinace. The Native Americans used the plant to treat many ailments, including wounds, burns, insect bites, toothaches, throat infections, pain, cough, stomach cramps, and snake bites. Present-day uses: Pharmaceutical and Biological Advantages High in Antioxidants Echinacea plants are loaded with plant compounds that function as antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules that help defend your cells against oxidative stress, a state that has been linked to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and many others. Some of these antioxidants are flavonoids, cichoric acid and rosmarinic acid ( 3 Trusted Source ), which may help defend your body against oxidative stress. These antioxidants appear to be higher in extracts from the fruit and flowers of the plants, compared to other parts, such as the leaves and root. In addition, Echinacea plants contain compounds called Alkamides, which can further enhance antioxidant activity. Alkamides can renew worn-out antioxidants and help antioxidants better reach molecules that are prone to oxidative stress. Summary The plant is important economically, to the pharmaceutical trade. It is purported that all parts of the purple Coneflower stimulate the immune system. Both the plant’s upper parts and roots are used in tablets, tinctures, extracts and teas. Echinacea plants contain an impressive variety of active compounds, such as caffeic acid, alkamides, phenolic acids, rosmarinic acid, polyacetylenes and many more. In addition, studies have linked echinacea and their compounds to many health benefits, such as reduced inflammation, improved immunity and lower blood sugar levels. Well-controlled trials studying these uses are limited and low in quality. Study results are mixed on whether preparations including Echinacea can be useful for upper respiratory tract infections including colds. More recent studies have showed that the anti-inflammatory effects of this flower is due to its ability to stimulate the innate immune system, thus suggesting innate immunity is improve in the presence of this plant. Therefore evidence indicates that the plant only with its activated secondary metabolites, cause expression of NF-kB, and other major players of the immune system like, macrophages, eutrophic, and DCs. Though results in many studies show without a doubt, an immunity role for Echinacea purpurea it cannot be without out certain, that this is the case. Continuing studies will be introduced in regulated trail groups for the role of Echinacea purpurea, to evaluate it’s benefits in the human immune system. Use of echinacea in medicine. Percival SS1. Abstract Echinacea, also known as the purple coneflower, is an herbal medicine that has been used for centuries, customarily as a treatment for the common cold, coughs, bronchitis, upper respiratory infections, and some inflammatory conditions. Research on echinacea, including clinical trials, is limited and largely in German.
