Hibiscus coccineus is a Herbaceous perennial in the Malvaceae family. A native to the Southeastern United States from Virginia to Florida. Some common names include Swamp Hibiscus, White Rose Mallow, Texas Star, and White Hibiscus Alba. It is a hardy Hibiscus species that has leaves that look very much like Cannabis sativa leaves. It is found naturally growing in marshes, swamps, and ditches. Having the name Texas Star is funny since you can’t find one growing naturally in Texas. The red flowers on this one measure 10-12 inches across. It grows to almost 10 feet tall but is usually seen around 5-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. It is in bloom from late spring until mid-fall. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade in normal soil well-drained. The birds, bees, and butterflies will visit this one. Zones 6-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/4″ deep and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
