The cultivar ‘Heavenly Blue’ has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. The seeds, vines, flowers, and leaves contain ergo-line alkaloids, and have been used for centuries by many Mexican Native American cultures for spiritual enlightenment and to communicate with their gods. Easy perennial to grow from fresh seeds. A very long vine that will grow in any direction it can wrap onto, up to 15 feet or more along a fence or string. It will come back every year, 100% Guaranteed. And Really Wonderfully Scented. A Full sun is the best and partial shade will still work. Can be started indoors in the winter with a flowerpot, to be transplanted outdoors in spring. Or, can be sown directly into the ground in spring, summer or fall and it will grow in springtime, anywhere or in any soil in the USA, Canada and throughout the world. It’s The most popular morning glory variety. All-time favorite. Fast-growing, large vines with attractive foliage, producing a profusion of sky-blue flowers that open in the morning and fade by early evening. Fast growing climbers with 3-5″ across trumpet-shaped blooms of deep sky blue with creamy white throats and attractive heart-shaped foliage. Ideal for arbors, trellises, porches, banks, steep hills, fences or allow to trail from hanging baskets. Vines grow to 15 feet (4.60 meters) . Flowers from summer to early winter. Most of my favorite flowering vines are in the plant family Ipomoea. The most common member of this family is the morning glory Heavenly Blue, though there are about 300 more plants in this family, including the sweet potato, and many of them are twining climbers. As its name suggests, the flowers open in the morning and gradually fades during the evening. They will wrap their vines around anything—wood, wire, string, and even each other. Fittingly, in the language of flowers, they represent bonds and attachments. I love the heart-shaped leaves and sky blue flowers of ‘Heavenly Blue’ but the flowers do start to change to a darker color through the end of the year. And Hummingbirds can’t resist it! There can be hundreds of these blossoms, all at different stages of growth and colors, at the same time on a single plant. They really do look like tiny flags. All Ipomoeas prefer a sunny location with well-drained soil and tolerate drought. Do not fertilize them, in fact overly fertile soil will promote lush leaf growth instead of flowers. Soak the seeds overnight before planting to soften the seed coat and speed germination. Flowering vines are fast growers and will cover an unsightly spot in your yard in no time. They are charming when grown on a trellis or twined around the railings of your sunny porch or deck. They can be trained to form a living fence or privacy screen, provide shade, or just add a wall of color. As an architectural element, they lend a new dimension to any garden.Life Cycle: Annual that always comes back! Keep the soil moist at 70-75 degrees F; Seedlings emerge in about 21 days. These hearty flowers really enjoy the Sun. They always prefer full sun, But they’ll even grow in partial sun or indirect sunlight. Sow by seed in loosely covered soil. It’s best if soil is fertile (not poor) though they can tolerate tough conditions. Black-eyed Susan & The Gloriosa Daisy will generally grow between 1 and 3 feet tall (though the flower stalks can grow taller) and can spread between 12 to 18 inches, so plant seeds closer to prevent lots of spreading or plant further apart to make a nice border. Care Check your plants regularly to see if they need watering. Make sure they don’t dry out. Divide perennial types every 3 to 4 years to ensure healthy plants and to prevent excessive spreading. Be sure to remove faded or dead flowers to prolong blooming. You can cut back black-eyed Susan after they flower, a second smaller bloom may occur in late fall. Gloriosa daisies are tetraploid cultivars having much larger flower heads than the wild species, often doubled on the ray florets. They were first bred by Alfred Blakeslee of Smith College by applying colchicine to R. hirta seeds; Blakeslee’s stock was further developed by W. Atlee Burpee and introduced to commerce at the 1957 Philadelphia Flower Show. Gloriosa daisies are generally treated as annuals or short-lived perennials that love to reseed themselves and are typically grown from seed, though there are some named cultivars. ‘Save a nice sunny spot for a Vibrant Orange to Rustic Maroon color to really bloom a lot, and please don’t forget to give it some room, because these babies tend to sprawl out at least 12-16 inches’. CultureEasily grown in dry to medium moisture, should have well-drained soil in full or partial sun. Thrives in poor, sandy or rocky soils with good drainage. Tolerant of heat, humidity and drought. If left untouched it will continuously self seed itself, year after year. Plants are sometimes short-lived during harsh freezing winters and in this case it’s self-seeding properties will help to perpetuate a long-lasting spot in the garden. When grown in borders or other formal garden areas, division may be needed every 2-3 years to maintain robustness. May also be grown as annuals if preferred. Rudbeckia hirta has a sturdy upright flowering stem (sometimes considered a biennial that acts as a perennial) growing (14–36in.) tall by (18–22in.) wide. it comes back year after year when undisturbed. It has alternate, mostly basal leaves 10–18 cm long, covered by coarse hair, with a strong stout of branching stems and a reddish orange daisy-like composite flower head that may also be multi-colored with a very dark brown cone in the center. This plant starts to flower from early summer to the start of autumn. The specific epithet hirta is Latin for “hairy”, and refers to the trichomes (hairs) occurring on leaves and stems. Other common names for this plant include: brown-eyed Susan, brown betty, Gloriosa Fancy daisy, golden Jerusalem, English bull’s eye, poor-land daisy. Traditional Native American uses: The plant is thought to be an herbal medicine by Native American for various ailments. The roots but not the seed-heads of Rudbeckia hirta can be used much like the related Echinacea purpurea with unsubstantiated claims to boost immunity and fight colds, flu and infections. The Ojibwa people used it as a poultice for snake bites and to make an infusion for treating colds and worms in children. Noteworthy Characteristics Garden Uses: Borders. Also effective in naturalized areas, meadows, prairies or cottage gardens. A really good plant, for areas with poor soils. Just water and watch it Grow! Seeds are from my, “Brooklyn Botanical Garden Club”Rudbeckia hirta var. hirta Best Zone Area: 4-9 Height: 24 – 36 inches Bloom Time: Early-summer to Fall Light Requirements: Full Sun, Partial Sun Common Name: Black-Eyed Susan-Brown-Eyed Susan, Fancy Gloriosa Daisy Type: sometimes a biennial that acts as a perennial Height: 1.50 to 3 feet Spread: 1.50 to 2.00 feet Bloom Time: June to September Bloom Description: Large Orange Flower w/Black or dark brown Center Cone Water: Dry to medium Maintenance: Low Suggested Use: Naturalize Flower: Showy, Great for Cuttings Attracts: Many Butterflies & Bees Tolerate: Rabbit, Deer, Cats, Dogs, Drought, Dry Soil, Shallow-Rocky Soil, Sandy & Clay SoilsDescription Everyone’s favorite summertime flower is the black-eyed Susan, sometimes an annual, sometimes a perennial, and sometimes a biennial (flowering in its second year, then dying). This is a member of the huge aster or composite family, and has the typical daisy-like flower heads, consisting of an outer ring of ray florets and a central receptacle composed of many disk florets. Black-eyed Susan’s typically stay in a basal rosette their first year, and then produce upright branching stems with flowers in their second year. The rough-textured basal leaves are diamond shaped, 4-7 in (10-18 cm) long, and have three conspicuous veins. When she’s ready, black-eyed Susan produces erect, bristly stems to 3 ft (0.9 m) tall, which branch freely and bear hairy lance shaped leaves, 2-3 in (5-7.6 cm) long. Some forms of black-eyed Susan are true annuals and some are true perennials, though. The flower heads in the wild form are up to 3 in (7.6 cm) across and produced abundantly throughout the summer until mid-autumn. The 10-20 rays are usually yellow or golden and the receptacle is purplish brown and often distinctly conical. The ‘Gloriosa’ and ‘Double Gloriosa’ cultivars have very large flower-heads, to 6 in (15 cm) across, with yellow, gold, chestnut or reddish bronze rays. They are perennial, but bloom from seed in their first year. ‘Gloriosa’ daisies are tetraploids, with twice the normal number of chromosomes. They were created by treating normal plants with radiation or the DNA altering chemical, colchicine. Nevertheless, they come true from seed. ‘Indian Summer’, with golden yellow flower heads 6-8 in (15-20 cm) across, and ‘Goldilocks’, with double flowers are probably tetraploids as well. Black-eyed Susan is easy and carefree and more than happy to live out on her own by the road under the mailbox. LocationThere are three regional varieties of Rudbeckia hirta, the wild black-eyed Susan, with one occurring naturally throughout much of North America from British Columbia to Newfoundland and south to Texas and Florida. The species is absent only from the Southwest. Black-eyes Susan’s grow in prairies, dry fields, open woods, along road shoulders and in disturbed areas. Culture Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming. Light: Full sun to light shade. Moisture: Once established, black-eyed Susan’s are fairly drought tolerant, but they perform best with regular watering in soil that does not completely dry out. Hardiness: USDA Zones 3 – 10. Propagation: Sow seeds in place 2 weeks before the last expected frost or give them a head start indoors 6-8 weeks before setting out. The seeds need light to germinate, so just press them into the soil surface – don’t bury them. Some of the cultivars are decidedly perennial, and these are best propagated by dividing the root mass during the dormant season. Usage Black-eyed Susan is at home in the naturalized, semi-wild garden, in borders and in flower beds. She won’t complain if relegated to the cutting garden, either. Black-eyed Susan is a reliable summertime bloomer, providing bright splashes of color in a mixed perennial border or porch planter. Butterflies of many species are attracted to black-eyed Susan. But one of Susan’s most influential uses is for resolving that age old lover’s question: “… she loves me, she loves me not, she loves me, she loves me not, she loves me.” FeaturesThere are about 25 species of Rudbeckia, all native to North America. Orange coneflower (R. fulgida var. sullivantii) is another popular garden perennial. Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is closely related and are also being sold, here at SaveDoe. The genus was named for the Swedish physician/botanist, Olaus Rudbeck (1660-1740), who preceded Carolus Linnaeus, the inventor of the binomial system of biological nomenclature, at the University of Upsala Please Note Our Return Policy At SaveDoe: THERE’S NEVER ANY RESTOCKING FEES ON ANYTHING YOU PURCHASE and We Will Insure your Satisfaction on Every Item! For over 100 years the Brooklyn Botanical Garden has grown seven different varieties, “But we always favored the Purpurea, It’s simply, The Best!” I have always appreciated this plant for its durability during a dry season, it’s always able to withstand any long hot dry summers, but always hardy enough to survive right up to the coldest winter days. It’s a Perennial type plant which also reseeds itself and is very hardy. It flowers the first year in the very beginning of summer and continues constantly throughout autumn. They have been tested for germination and are guaranteed to grow dozens of flowering buds, Year after Year. Each flower is a beautiful purplish-pink and it’s leafs, stems, and seeds were known to be used through-out the centuries for medicinal applications. In fact, It’s still in use in the world today. Description:A long flowering variety producing a profusion of rosy pinkish-mauve purple flowers from early summer to late fall, a vigorous grower with strong roots and sturdy flowering stems, it really stands out in the late summer garden when most flowers are dead. Ornamental Features Coneflowers have masses of beautiful lightly-scented purplish-pink daisy flowers with a reddish-bronze eyes in the cone flower’s center. Its pointy leaves remain green in color throughout the season. They are know to be planted in groupings along side the Black-Eyed Susan. And the long stemmed flowers are excellent for cuttings because they stand straight and stay stiff in a long vase with water, for a very long time. Landscape Attributes Coneflower is an herbaceous perennial with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition. This is a relatively low maintenance plant, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It is a good choice for attracting butterflies to your yard, but the taste is not particularly attractive to deer, who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats in the garden. It has no significant negative characteristics. Coneflower is recommended for the following landscape applications; Mass PlantingGeneral Garden UseContainer Planting Planting & Growing Coneflower will grow to be about 36 inches tall at maturity with extending stems and flowers up to 4 feet tall, with a spread of up to 24 inches wide. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 10 years. This plant will grow the best under full sunlight. It is very adaptable to partial sunlight in both dry and moist locations, and should do just fine under any typical garden conditions. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for a low-water garden application. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This is a selection of a native North American species. Common Name: Eastern purple coneflower Type: Herbaceous perennial Family: Asteraceae Zone: 3 to 8 Height: 3 1/2 feet to 4 feet Spread: 2 feet apart Bloom Time: June to September Bloom Description: violet pink to purple rays and bronze-ruby brown cone Sun: Full sun to slightly part shade Water: Dry to medium Maintenance: Low Suggested Use: Naturalize Flower: Showy Attracts: Birds, Butterflies Tolerate: Deer, Drought, Clay Soil, Dry Soil, Shallow-Rocky Soil Culture Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best in full sun. An adaptable plant that is tolerant of drought, heat, humidity and poor soil. Divide clumps when they become overcrowded (about every 4 years). Plants usually re-bloom without deadheading, however prompt removal of spent flowers improves general appearance. Freely self-seeds if at least some of the seed heads are left in place. . Noteworthy Characteristics Echinacea purpurea, commonly called purple coneflower, is a coarse, rough-hairy, herbaceous perennial that is native to moist prairies, meadows and open woods of the central to southeastern United States (Ohio to Michigan to Iowa south to Louisiana and Georgia). It typically grows to 3-4′ tall. Showy daisy-like purple coneflowers (to 4″ diameter) bloom throughout summer atop stiff stems clad with coarse, ovate to broad-lanceolate, dark green leaves. Good fresh cut or dried flower. The dead flower stems will remain erect well into the winter, and if flower heads are not removed, the blackened cones may be visited by goldfinches or other birds that feed on the seeds. Genus name of Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos meaning hedgehog or sea-urchin in reference to the spiny center cone found on most flowers in the genus. Garden Uses Excellent, long-blooming flower for massing in the border, meadow, native plant garden, naturalized area, wildflower garden or part shade area of woodland garden. Often massed with black-eyed Susans (rudbeckias). USDA Hardiness Zone 3-9 ( But it Can be grown in any zone ) Growing and Maintenance Tips Plant coneflowers in full sun and well drained soils. Go easy on fertilizer, especially in production, as the resulting quick growth seems to make the plant more susceptible to disease. A native American plant indigenous to the central plains, Echinacea purpurea is virtually indestructible. We all enjoy the color it brings to the summer garden with its large daisy-like, rosy purple petals surrounding a copper-colored, dome-shaped central seed head. Echinacea purpurea is a North American species of flowering plant in the sunflower family. It is native to eastern North America and present to some extent in the wild in much of the eastern, southeastern and mid-western United States as well as in the Canadian Province of Ontario. It is most common in the Ozarks and in the Mississippi / Ohio Valley. Description Echinacea purpurea is an herbaceous perennial from 2 1/2ft. to 3 1/2 tall by 18 in wide at maturity. Depending on the climate, it blooms throughout summer into autumn. Its cone-shaped flowering heads are usually, but not always, purple in the wild. Its individual flowers (florets) within the flower head are hermaphroditic, having both male and female organs in each flower. It is pollinated by butterflies and bees. The alternate leaves, borne by a petiole from 0 to 17 cm, are oval to lanceolate, 5-30 x 5-12 cm; the margin is tightened to toothed. The leaves are deciduous but the plant is perennial. Echinacea purpurea is also grown as an ornamental plant in temperate regions. It is ideal for curbs, walkways or beds. The flowers can also go into the composition of fresh bouquets. Numerous cultivars have been developed for flower quality and plant form. The plant grows in sun or light shade. It thrives in either dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought once established. Propagation Echinacea purpurea can be propagated either vegetative or from seeds. Useful vegetative techniques include division, root cuttings, and basal cuttings. Clumps can be divided, or broken into smaller bunches, which is normally done in the spring or autumn. Cuttings made from roots that are “pencil-sized” will develop into plants when started in late autumn or early winter. Cuttings of basal shoots in the spring may be rooted when treated with rooting hormones, such as IBA at 1000 ppm. Plants raised outdoors Seed germination occurs best with daily temperature fluctuations or after a good stratification, which help to end dormancy. Seeds may be started indoors in advance of the growing season or outdoors after the growing season has started. Chemistry Echinacea purpurea contains multiple secondary metabolites that are produced by this plant. Thy include: alkamides, caffeic acid derivatives, polysaccharides, and glycoproteins. The secondary metabolites are believed to be biologically and pharmacologically active. Traditional herbal medicine Native Americans have used it for centuries to treat various ailments. Today, it’s best known, as an over-the-counter herbal remedy for the common cold or flu. However, it’s also used to treat pain, inflammation, migraines and other health issues. This article reviews the benefits, uses, side effects and dosage of Echinace. The Native Americans used the plant to treat many ailments, including wounds, burns, insect bites, toothaches, throat infections, pain, cough, stomach cramps, and snake bites. Present-day uses: Pharmaceutical and Biological Advantages High in Antioxidants Echinacea plants are loaded with plant compounds that function as antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules that help defend your cells against oxidative stress, a state that has been linked to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and many others. Some of these antioxidants are flavonoids, cichoric acid and rosmarinic acid ( 3 Trusted Source ), which may help defend your body against oxidative stress. These antioxidants appear to be higher in extracts from the fruit and flowers of the plants, compared to other parts, such as the leaves and root. In addition, Echinacea plants contain compounds called Alkamides, which can further enhance antioxidant activity. Alkamides can renew worn-out antioxidants and help antioxidants better reach molecules that are prone to oxidative stress. Summary The plant is important economically, to the pharmaceutical trade. It is purported that all parts of the purple Coneflower stimulate the immune system. Both the plant’s upper parts and roots are used in tablets, tinctures, extracts and teas. Echinacea plants contain an impressive variety of active compounds, such as caffeic acid, alkamides, phenolic acids, rosmarinic acid, polyacetylenes and many more. In addition, studies have linked echinacea and their compounds to many health benefits, such as reduced inflammation, improved immunity and lower blood sugar levels. Well-controlled trials studying these uses are limited and low in quality. Study results are mixed on whether preparations including Echinacea can be useful for upper respiratory tract infections including colds. More recent studies have showed that the anti-inflammatory effects of this flower is due to its ability to stimulate the innate immune system, thus suggesting innate immunity is improve in the presence of this plant. Therefore evidence indicates that the plant only with its activated secondary metabolites, cause expression of NF-kB, and other major players of the immune system like, macrophages, eutrophic, and DCs. Though results in many studies show without a doubt, an immunity role for Echinacea purpurea it cannot be without out certain, that this is the case. Continuing studies will be introduced in regulated trail groups for the role of Echinacea purpurea, to evaluate it’s benefits in the human immune system. Use of echinacea in medicine. Percival SS1. Their seeds and leaves have famous medicinal qualities for the immune system and they make great, long lasting cut flowers, and lets not forget how they attract numerous butterflies, bees & small birds. Echinacea Rudbeckia, is my most favorite native American plant. It’s rugged pollinator cone flower will always come back, year after year, without any help. It comes in so many colors, shapes, and sizes, and the various types, can become very confusing. The plants start with alternate leaves, borne by a petiole from 0 to 17 cm, they are oval to lanceolate, 5-30 x 5-12 cm; the margin is tightened to toothed. The young plants in springtime will add beauty to your garden and in it’s 2nd. year will start blooming flowers in the late spring, This is one plant that won’t disappoint you, year after year, with dozens of beautiful flowers, that last a long time all through the growing season. The erect stem is very stout and will stand upright, furnished with smaller upward branches, which broaden its diameter with more and more flowering buds. The flowers are lavender to pinkish purple and surround a reddish-bronze colored center dome. But best of all, Once a flower appears, it will stay there, on the plant, Right until the end of the growing season. And If you cut them off when the plant is young, more flowers will appear. They can reach heights of up to 4 feet, and grow the best, with a full view of the sun and light to medium watering. They are sometimes used for a property barrier, surrounding your home or garden. This species is one of the strongest stems with prominent, bristly seed heads of Echinacea seed. The cone flower becomes slightly sharp, but is not going to hurt you or stick into anyone’s skin or clothing. This feature can be helpful, if your garden or property gets invaded by humans or small natural wildlife. You’ll See! These flowers don’t fall off and are very hard for strangers to pick without permission, you see, to pick a flower off this plant, you must use a scissor. They can really make a nice garden border and will help bring in birds, bees and butterflies, that will have help germinate the rest of the flowering plants in your garden. These majestic plants prefer full sunlight and well drained soil, but not as well in partial sunlight or against a brick wall. Partially shaded area’s will still grow with a smaller amount of colorful flowers. Our seeds are fully matured for 2024 ready for this season’s new crop. Science is constantly testing it’s Health Benefits.
