It’s not uncommon to see dead tree skeletons left standing(particularly since Texas has been enduring record, tree killing drought conditions for over 3 years) just to support breath taking displays of Coral Vine. It’s a native of Mexico and for generations has been widely grown across Texas for its beautiful, lacy pink flowers that begin early, break out in full force after the first good summer rain and persist until frost. Prepared as food by the aboriginal inhabitants of Baja California…very much like popcorn….toasting the seeds in baskets under coals. The seeds burst open, exposing a white meal. Then they would grind and eat the prepared meal…or boil it and make fried cakes. The root tubers are also edible. The textured heart-shaped leaves are dense enough to provide heavenly, cooling summer shade on trellises, pergolas and arbors. Very easy to grow with adequate drainage and PLENTY OF SUN. The first hard frost will kill the top growth and knock it back to the ground, but established plants produce sweet potato-like tubers that bounce back readily and rapidly in the spring. Seeds started in the fall will not have time to establish tubers, so they should be germinated in pots and be wintered over inside, and set out into the landscape in spring. After germinating and developing good root systems in the landscape, the vines are very drought tolerant. EVERGREEN in USDA ZONES 9 – 11, and DECIDIOUS in ZONE 8…..grow as an annual or in containers farther north.
