So many uses for this beautiful, abundant pink EDIBLE fragrant flowers from spring into fall that attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and bees! Birds LOVE to forage for and eat the seeds! Long, narrow seed pods, and dried or fresh flowers can all be brewed for medicinal herbal tea, said to be especially good for fevers and coughs. Full sun and drought tolerant and easy to grow. Seeds germinate in 1-3 weeks. Best started indoors. Soak seeds for a few hours before just barely covering with potting soil. Best to grow indoors in a pot for first year. The following spring harden off outside in full time partial shade before planting in the ground in full sun. Perennial in zones 8-11. Usually returns from dormancy in zones 6-7. Can be pruned and shaped into shrub or prune to desired shape as a tree, 15-20’ tall. Grows great in desert climates. Though called a Desert Willow, they are not willows. They belong to begonia family! They do have droopy branches and long slender leaves. The bark can be used to make clothing and nets, and though bitter, it can be eaten as an emergency food source—though best eaten dried and ground into a flour. Unlike willows, desert willows are strong and Native Americans used them to make hunting bows. Hardy to -10, it does drop leaves in fall.
