Withania Somnifera Also known as: Indian Ginseng, Ashwagandha, Poison Gooseberry, Winter Cherry A short tender perennial shrub grown as an annual, like a tomato, and will only reach 35–75 cm (14–30 in) tall. Tomentose branches extend radially from a central stem. The small green flowers are hermaphrodite (having both male and female organs). The ripe fruit is orange-red. It will flower and fruit in its first year from seed. It is one of the most widespread tranquilizers used in India, where it holds a position of importance similar to ginseng in China but it’s easier and faster to grow. It acts mainly on the reproductive and nervous systems. Roots are dug in the Fall, dried, and used to improve vitality, enhance sexuality, promote restful sleep, anemia and to aid recovery after illness. The whole plant, but especially the leaves and the root bark, are abortifacient, adaptogen, antibiotic, aphrodisiac, deobstruent, diuretic, narcotic, strongly sedative and tonic.
