BIRDHOUSE BOTTLE GOURD is an heirloom, open-pollinated gourd variety that’s probably the most popular gourd for making birdhouses and other crafts. These gourds have a rounded bottom with a narrow center and a slight bulb at the stem end. Plants will average 4-6 fruits per plant. This is great variety for growing with children. Birdhouse Bottle Gourd should be harvested when the green rind starts to turn brown. These are great for attracting martins around the garden and homestead. Trellis for consistently sized fruits. 20+ seeds per order. lagenaria siceraria. Full sun. Spring. Soil temp 70+. Soak seeds overnight. Trellis these for consistent, best shaped gourds. SOW-On small hills. 1/2" deep, about 24" apart. Rows about 6' apart. Keep moist. Germination 10-30 days. Birdhouse gourds need steady medium/heavy water at roots. They are also heavy feeders. Fertilize every 30 days. Maturity in about 120-140 days. Best if left to overwinter on vine to dry. Fall Harvest - leave about a 4" stem when cutting off, or gourd will rot. Store in cool, dry space.
