Its genus name of “Rubus” means “bramble,” and the specific epithet “Ursinus” means “bear.” Larvae of the western tiger swallowtail butterfly love to munch on it. Native Americans ate it and also used it medicinally. If you have a creek bank that needs stabilizing, this plant will do it.Grows best in full sun to partial shade, and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions. For optimal fruit production, they require an adequate amount of water during the growing season.Zones 3-7California Blackberry Germination:1) To scarify the tiny seeds, place them in a zip lock bag of moist sand and rub them around really good to scuff up the hard seed shells.2) Pour almost boiling water over them, and let them soak for 24 hours.3) Cold stratify by placing them in a wet paper towel placed inside of a zip lock bag. Place bag inside the fridge for 90 days.4) Plant no more than 1/8 of an inch deep in moist seed starting mix.5) Use a grow light, & a heated propagator mat to keep them at 75 degrees F.6) Expect germination within 2-3 weeks.
