Test Banana Melon (Cucumis melo) Check out our other listings! Banana Melon is an old heirloom variety that first appeared in J.H. Gregory's seed catalog in 1885, where he said of this melon "When ripe it reminds one of a large, overgrown banana... it smells like one, having a remarkably powerful and delicious fragrance." The yellow skinned, banana shaped melons grow up to 24 inches in length and weight up to 8 pounds each. Deliciously fragrant flesh is salmon-orange with a sweet and spicy flavor. Start indoors 2-4 weeks before transplanting. Sow several seeds 1/2 inch deep in individual peat pots or seed trays and use a heating mat to keep the soil at 75 degrees F or higher until germination occurs. Thin to the strongest plant after the seedlings have developed their first set of true leaves. When the outdoor soil temperature has warmed to around 70 to 80 degrees F, transplant the seedlings to hills 4 to 6 feet apart with 2 to 3 plants per hill. 90 days to maturity.
