Waterleaf, Efo gbure,Mgbolodi, Cuban Cachucha, Bokoboko spinach, Ceylon spinach, Surinam purslane, Philippine spinach, Sweetheart Water leaf is a vegetable crop native to and grown in Africa, Asia, Central and South America. Grows well in average temperatures of 68⁰F to 95⁰F. It cannot tolerate very cold conditions and it's roots will most likely rot in waterlogged conditions. Waterleaf is an erect perennial herb species with swollen roots and obtuse-angular, hairless, and succulent stems, which can grow to 3–10 feet in height. The leaf blades are usually spoon-shaped and succulent. It is tasty, a bit tart and great for stir fries, soups and stews. Waterleaf has pink-colored flowers, which are bisexual and primarily self-pollinate with limited outcrossing. The inflorescences are triangular. Fruit ripening occurs about two weeks from flowering. The fruits/pods are light-green, ellipsoid capsules, which are dehiscent with many dark brown seeds. Waterleaf can stand scorching sun, excessive heat and draught. It can be easily propagated from seeds and cuttings, and is ready to be harvested in less than two months. It spreads so easily from seed. Those in Zones 6 and 7 should plant between June and July when the soil has warmed up. Seeds sold here were harvested from hand-picked ripe pods (ready to burst), this eliminates poor viability.
