Amaranthus Pygmy Torch is an edible annual in the Amaraceceae family. Its native range is from the central United States to Mexico. Familiar names include Amaranthus, Grain Amaranth, Prince-of-Wales Feather, Prince's Feather, and Purple Amaranth 'Pygmy Torch'. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. In temperate regions, it can be a half-hardy annual. The leaves and seeds are edible with a mild flavor. It can grow to around 2 feet tall and 2-4 feet wide. It prefers to grow in full sun with afternoon shade. It requires average water needs with well-drained soil. Annual Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly tamp down and cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic, and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
