Its native range is from Mexico to Baja, California, and Sonora. Some familiar names include Blue Hesper Palm, Gray Goddess, and Mexican Blue Fan Palm. It can be seen growing in washed-out areas near canyon bottoms and rock crevices in higher elevations. It likes to grow with other palms such as Washingtonia filifera and Washingtonia robusta. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is widely used as an ornamental. It can grow to 50 feet tall with a robust trunk. The bluish-green leaves reach out 3-7 feet and are 3 feet wide. It forms a shag around the trunk like many palms and are cut off to keep a clean appearance. The fragrant inflorescence reaches 15 feet long, falling toward the ground in February and March. The fruits start green and turn yellow-brown when ripe. The fruits are about an inch in diameter. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with little water needs. Zones 9-11 Germination Soak seeds for 48 hours in warm water. Sow seeds 2" deep, then tamp seeds into the soil and lightly cover.
