Canna indica is a Tropical or Tender Perennial in the Cannaceae family. Some of the common names are African arrowroot, Indian shot, purple arrowroot, edible canna, and Sierra Leone arrowroot. A native to Central America, the West Indies, Mexico, and most of South America. It can grow up to 8 feet tall and spread out from the rhizomes to 10 feet or more. The beautiful red flowers appear atop a tall stem. The starch from Canna indica is easily digested and is well suited as baby food and for baking. The leaves are used to wrap pastries, tamales, and other foods that use banana leaves. Zones 9-11. Germination Soak seeds for 24 hours. Sow seeds 1" deep in moist soil. Cover seed tray and place in a bright spot. Germination will take 10-30 days.
