Cestrum diurnum is a perennial shrub or perennial in the Solanaceae family. Its native range is from Florida to the Caribbean and Mexico. Familiar names include China Berry, Chinese Inkberry, Day-Blooming Cestrum, Day Jasmine, and Din ka Raja. A rather quick-growing shrub with numerous leafy branches. It is grown in India in gardens for its chocolate smell and beautiful foliage. It can grow to around 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide. The leaves are alternate, ovate-lanceolate shape with a striking white vein. The flowers are born on a peduncle that bears sweet-smelling clusters of flowers from late spring until mid-summer. They are about 1-2 inches long and 1/4" in diameter. They prefer to grow in light shade with constantly moist soil. Zones 8-11 Germination Soak seeds for 24 hours. Sow seeds 1/4" deep, then tamp seeds into the soil and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 30-60 days.
