Liatris ligulistylis is a herbaceous perennial in the Asteraceae family. Its native range is from western central Canada to the west of central United States. Familiar names include Round-headed Blazing Star, Meadow Blazing Star, Rocky Mountain Blazing Star, and Showy Blazing Star. A good-cut flower for arrangements. This one likes high heat and humidity. It grows naturally in prairies, gravel areas, along streams, on rocky slopes, or in rocky woods. If grown in loamy soils, you will need to stake them as they will grow taller in this soil. It can grow to about 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide from a clump-forming root system. The green 6-inch leaves are basal leaves surrounding the base. The deep rose-purple flowers are thistle-like on an inflorescence. Butterflies will visit. It prefers to grow in full sun with an average water need and well-drained soil. Zones 4-9GerminationPlace your seeds and some soil in a ziplock bag. Moisten the mixture enough, so it sticks together without water dripping out. Write the name of the seeds on the bag. Place the mixture in your refrigerator for 60 days. Seeds can then be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost and covered lightly with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep it moist until germination.
