Passiflora quadrangularis is a perennial climber in the Passifloraceae family. Native to Central and South America. Some common names include the giant granadilla, barbadine, grenadine, giant tumbo, or Badea. It produces the largest fruit within the genus Passiflora. This vigorous climber is evergreen with large cordate leaves and beautiful red scented flowers with purple and white filaments. It can grow to 40 feet long in the right conditions. It is cold hardy to 59F or can be kept under glass in a container. The fruits are oblong with edible pulp and seeds inside. The fruit juice is used as a beverage or cooked as a curry vegetable dish. The seeds are also eaten as snacks or pressed for their juice. This vine has won the award for the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Zones 10-11 Germination Rub the passiflora seeds with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper. Soak seeds for 72 hours. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds and lightly cover with a medium.
