Paulownia tomentosa is a deciduous tree in the Paulowniaceae family. Some familiar names include princess tree, empress tree, or foxglove tree. A native to central and western China. It is a fast-growing tree reaching 30–80 feet tall. It has large heart-shaped leaves that are five-lobed and 5–15 inches across. The super fragrant flowers are large, 4-10" and violet-blue. They are produced before the leaves in early spring. The egg-shaped fruits are a few inches long with several tiny seeds being winged and dispersed by wind and water. It requires full sun and is tolerant of pollution and many soil types. This tree has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Birds, bees, and butterflies visit the fragrant flowers. In bloom from mid-spring until early summer. Zones 5-9 Germination Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag.
