Penstemon laricifolius var. laricifolius, commonly known as larch-leaf penstemon, is a perennial herb native to the southwestern United States, including areas such as New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of northern Mexico. It is well-suited to arid and semi-arid environments, often found in open, rocky slopes, desert grasslands, and scrublands. This variety features distinctive, finely dissected leaves resembling those of larch trees, hence its name. It grows to about 12 to 24 inches in height and produces dense, upright spikes of tubular flowers in late spring to early summer. The flowers are typically in shades of pink, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. Penstemon laricifolius var. laricifolius is adapted to well-drained soils and is drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. Zones 3-9 Germination The seeds of Penstemon laricifolius var. laricifolius generally require cold stratification to mimic natural conditions and promote germination. To achieve this, seeds should be mixed with a moist, well-draining medium such as sand or perlite and stored in a refrigerator at 35-40°F (2-4°C) for 30 to 60 days. After stratification, seeds should be sown on the surface of a well-draining soil mix, such as a combination of sand and peat, since they need light to germinate. Ideal germination temperatures range from 60-70°F (15-21°C). Germination typically occurs within 2 to 4 weeks. It is crucial to maintain consistent moisture in the soil, but avoid waterlogging. Once germinated, seedlings are well-suited to dry, well-drained soils, reflecting the plant's natural habitat.
