This auction is for 3 rhizomes (living plant starts) Ginger grows easily from rhizomes and its much more economical and healthier for the plant to ship without soil and leaves. . These will spread and create a beautiful privacy screen with rich green shiny leaves and waxy pink flowers. SHELL GINGER -alpinia zerumbet is a tall and dramatic landscape or container plant native to Indonesia, India, Southeast Asia. Commonly grown as an ornamental for its flowers and foliage. Zone: 8 to 11. Shell ginger is root-hardy in zone 7, Mulching is helpful. Useful as an annual or houseplant anywhere. It gets its common name because its individual shell pink flowers, particularly when in bud, resemble sea shells. Unlike other members of the ginger family , its flowers droop from the ends of leafy stems rather than rising directly from plant rhizomes. The fragrant flowers are waxy; light pink flower buds open to tubular flowers with yellow inside lips and red throats. The plant produces lance-shaped dark green shiny leaves to 2' long and 5" wide. Flowers are fragrant and appear in drooping racemes in summer. . Leaves and flowers are attractive in flower arrangements. All parts of the plant are highly fragrant when crushed. The habit is upright and does not require staking as do some other members of the ginger family. They adapt well to poor soils and are vigorous growers. Herbaceous shrub to 7-10ft. grows in upright clumps to 8-10’ tall in tropical climates. It more typically reaches 4-8’ tall in the greenhouse and 3-4’ tall as a houseplant. Mine is about 7" tall in my south Louisiana garden. The shell ginger produces rhizomes which are hardy to the 20's. The plant will die back with freezing temperatures. In cold climates, rhizomes can be dug up and stored indoors for the winter. Shell gingers grow well in shade or filtered sunlight making them good as indoor potted plants. Provide ample water and humidity. They have the best foliage in partial sun up to 50%. If grown outside in zone 7, you need to mulch them well when the foliage dies back in the fall. You can also lift the rhizomes and store them in vermiculite in a cool room until the danger of frost is over. Plants will not flower until the second year (they bloom on old growth), so if grown outdoors in a climate where it freezes, they can be enjoyed only for their attractive foliage unless overwintered indoors. Mine blooms outside after a year with a mild winter. (It helps that it is growing partially under a cedar tree providing frost protection). I use it for a privacy screen as it grows in thick clumps and is tall and attractive. Propagation: Propagated by the division of the rhizome. Other Uses: Leaves are used to wrap rice or meat for steaming in china and S.E.Asia. Its leaves possess antibacterial and mothproof properties. Medicinal uses: There are many medicinal uses documented by scientific research as well as traditional uses . (This information is available on the web for educational purposes and has not been evaluated or approved by the FDA). Consult your doctor before taking any medicinal herbs. Shell ginger is reputed to be useful as: a heart tonic ,to reduce blood pressure, indigestion, gas, flu, colds, reduce fever, anti bacteria, anti yeast (candida) and fungus, analgesic (reduces pain), anti-inflammatory ,antioxidant, muscle relaxer, diuretic, anti-ulcer.They caution not to take it if you are pregnant because it stimulates the uterus and is contraindicated in pregnancy. It may also increase the effectiveness of medications used to treat hypertension. BETTER THAN COMBINED SHIPPPING: what's better than combined shipping discount? i include in the package extra plants that are worth MUCH more than the $2-3 refund you would receive for multiple purchases that fit in one package. i am generous because i appreciate your business! Shell ginger is already used for ice cream, buckwheat noodles, cosmetics, moth repellents and aromatics. However, only its leaves have been used, and the stem is thrown away. Kurabo Industries Ltd. has succeeded in developing a technology to spin cotton and shell ginger, into a yarn. In May, the company marketed fabrics made from this blended yarn.
