Solanum scabrum is an annual or perennial herb in the Solanaceae family. Its native range is from Tropical and Southern Africa to the West Indian Ocean. Familiar names include Garden Huckleberry. In Africa, it is used as a leaf vegetable and berries for dyes. As an annual, it grows to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide. The leaves are sparsely hairy and usually ovate but can be broader. The inflorescence is branched with 9-12 flowers that are white almost an inch wide but maybe tinged purple with the basal star being yellow and green. Annual Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
