Strelitzia nicolai is a tender perennial in the Strelitziaceae family. Some common names include Giant White Bird of Paradise, Natal Strelitzia, and Wild Banana. A native to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Botswana. A woody-like banana that can grow to 20 feet tall and clump out to almost 10 feet wide. The large eaves are as impressive as the flowers. They can reach lengths of 6 feet long and 2 feet wide. The 6" flowers are presented in a dark-blue bract from late Spring until Mid Summer. The white sepals display spread out like a bird flying. This Strelitzia can be very impressive once fully grown and can survive a light frost. It prefers to grow in rich soils with full sun to partial shade.
