Viola cornuta is a perennial in the Violaceae family. Its native range is Spain and France. Some familiar names include Horned Violet or Tufted Pansy. Viola cornuta and the white-flowered Alba Group have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. In its native habitat, it grows at elevations of 3,500-7,500 feet. It is a low-growing evergreen perennial that forms a clump. It can reach 20 inches tall and wide. The leaves are ovated with teeth on the margins. It puts out lots of fragrant flowers in the mid-spring until mid-summer with violet and yellow petals that are strap-shaped. It can grow in full sun as well as part shade. It requires well-drained soil and average water needs. Zones 6-9 Germination Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
